Over the past decade, the number of Americans who are underinsured has risen dramatically due to decreasing employer- sponsored insurance coverage and rising health care costs.
In fact, 61% of uninsured adults stated that the main cause was the high cost of health insurance or job loss. And most uninsured are low-income working families. 1
Without proper insurance coverage, access to care for these individuals is (obviously) worse than those who are insured. And when they do seek medical care, they face extremely high costs.
In 2013, almost a third of uninsured adults went without needed medical care due to cost, nearly 40% said they had outstanding medical bills, and 20% said they had medical bills that caused serious financial strain. 1
Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that the uninsured are less likely than to receive both preventive care and services for major health conditions and chronic diseases. Failure to seek proper medical care often results in worsening of medical conditions and subsequent increased healthcare costs. And so the cycle continues.
